And it keeps getting worse…

Posted by Rachel on January 31, 2008

Now my wallet is missing. I have a feeling it was stolen while I was at the gym or something… ugh…  This is just not what I needed today. Parking tickets and art supplies I need to get… Plus food… and gas. Oh god I am so beyond screwed.

The Worst Part of Waking Up

Posted by Rachel on January 31, 2008

I woke up this morning and remembered I left my car in a no parking 12:01-6:00 AM spot, tow-away zone. I was feeling rather craptastic as it was and relishing the fact that I didn’t have a class until late afternoon, but nope. I ran out into the frigid in just my PJs, to go see if my car was still there.

Luckily it was and there was a nice shiny parking ticket waiting for me. Which makes two I have to pay… I’ll just go to town hall and pay them. I’ll return the books for Children’s Lit now that I dropped it and I’ll use the money from that. That damn car is more trouble than it’s worth sometimes.

A Case of Bad Marketing

Posted by Rachel on January 30, 2008

Barbie used to market a “Barbie and Ken- Together Forever” series, which included the suicidal, overly-hormonal couple Romeo and Juliet… the series was discontinued shortly thereafter.
Didn’t Barbie and Ken split up? … and then get back together? You’d think there’s a problem in this country when plastic dolls are getting more action than yourself.

Posted by Rachel on January 30, 2008

This is the second semester of a class I took last semester as well, same professor too. I loooooooove Prof K. Last semester we read A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It, Henry IV Part 1, King Lear, Measure for Measure, Coriolanus, and The Tempest.

This semester we’re reading Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, Richard II, Troilus and Cressida, Hamlet, Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, and The Winter’s Tale. Exit pursued by a bear, anyone?

It won’t be the same without Aria in the class… our combined notes were…. interesting… Here’s just a piece of my notes from As You Like It

Abnormal Psych with Prof O

Posted by Rachel on January 30, 2008

I knew I was going to love this class from the time that Prof O told us he wasn’t going to take us through the clinical definitions of each and every disorder that we cover. Thank god.

Prof O: I don’t need to tell you what depression is, you already know that. You go into the dining halls, you look at the food and you feel depressed.

Today in class we went through some figures from history and their mental disorders! It only furthers the proof that the line between genius and insanity is very thin. Often it’s called talent.

  • Beethoven- Suffered from manic-depression. Many artists do actually, it’s the mania that allows mass production of work.
  • Van Gogh- Temporal lobe epilepsy, which effects not motor skills but just the emotions. Did you know epilepsy medication can help cure bipolar disorder?
  • Abraham Lincoln- Depression. Though normally though of as driven and dedicated it might be because of his bleak outlook on life.
  • Virginia Wolfe- Hypographia. Seriously? It’s a disease where you can’t stop writing. If you’re over that talent line you should be fine, but if you write gibberish you’d probably fall into that category of distress.
  • Winston Churchill- Bipolar. Some scholars say if he didn’t have the mania that comes with this disease he would not have been able to carry on so feriociously in a war with almost no chance of winning. Also he was an alcoholic, likely self medicating.

Other than that, there’s the geek theory of autism- The highest rates of diagnosis of autism are in Silicon Valley?

The Tale of a Nasty Art Prof

Posted by Rachel on January 30, 2008

Okay, I know I have to get caught up covering the last three days worth of classes and my initial impressions and all that kinda junk and I’ll do it tonight. But mostly I’m here to say F*CK YOU PROF. F!

I had signed up to take Introduction to Digital Media, sounds awesome right? Well I get into the class and the first thing I notice is that I can’t breathe. It’s a bit muggy but it’s getting worse. Then I look around and notice the professor has her DOG in the classroom. (I’m rather allergic as it were.) But I sit and try to bear it. I’m sitting there listening to her go on and on about her tough-love attitude towards art and showing us what were amazing feats of technology (a beautiful video of women in famous art morphing into each other which must have taken so much work) and telling us how crappy it was, saying it was like getting hit in the face with a hammer.

Now, I am no great artist, and I’m sure she has a point. I’m sure in the art world there are things I don’t understand, things about beauty which are just not my forte. I figured at first I’d just wait until the class was over and leave but the frigid bitch kept going on and on and praising herself and her ideas and shooting down students she had in the past that I very blatantly packed up my shit and got up and left the classroom.

Finally I could breathe again. I went right back to my room and logged online and dropped the class. I was going to take Children’s Lit but I don’t think I can handle the work load.

Welcome!

Posted by Rachel on January 30, 2008

Hey there. It’s currently Day 3 of my second semester of my sophmore year at an all women’s college. Yikes! After this I’ll be half way through with my college life and I’ll have to start thinking about the real world.

So what’s the point of this blog? Well I really need to raise my GPA. It’s not too bad right now, a B+ but I would like to get it up to the A- range, and I figure the best way to do that is to have a bunch of people bug me to get my work done! Doesn’t that sound like fun?

Anyways, over the course of the semester I’ll post my assignments I have, what I have gotten done, what I need to get done, grades I get, themes for papers I write, and crap with my social life. Feel free to ask me questions, berate me, or just lurk and don’t post at all but hopefully I’ll make it through this semester and raise my GPA and you’ll be along for the ride.

I’d write more but right now I gotta get going to Abnormal Psychology! :) Fun!
