Normal Again: Buffy’s Undifferentiated Schizophrenia

Posted by Rachel on March 31, 2008

I finally found out what that means. There are many kinds of Schizophrenia:

Paranoid- Primary symptoms delusions/hallucinations
Catatonic-… well…. that would involve catatonia
Disorganized- Showing primarily lack of cohesive thought, babbling, “word salad”
Undifferentiated- showing symptoms from various kinds of Schizophrenia

i.e.- Buffy had symptoms of Paranoid and Catatonic Schizophrenia, but since the DSM has this thing about not combining conditions they had to come up with a new one.

Song Analysis: Themes about Teen Life

Posted by Rachel on March 30, 2008

I have to analyze the lyrics to a song with teen related themes. It seems only appropriate to do “Teenagers” by My Chemical Romance. My 13 year old brother loves this song.

They’re gonna clean up your looks
With all the lies in the books
To make a citizen out of you
Because they sleep with a gun
And keep an eye on you, son
So they can watch all the things you do

Because the drugs never work
They gonna give you a smirk
’cause they got methods
In keeping you clean
They gonna rip up your heads
Your aspirations to shreds
Another cog in the murder machine

They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They could care less as long as someone’ll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they’ll leave you alone
But not me

The boys and girls in the clique
The awful names that they stick
You’re never gonna fit in much, kid
But if you’re troubled and hurt
What you got under your shirt
Will make them pay for the things that they did

They said all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They could care less as long as someone’ll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they’ll leave you alone
But not me

Oh yeah!

They say all teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They could care less as long as someone’ll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they’ll leave you alone
But not me

All together now,
Teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They could care less as long as someone’ll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they’ll leave you alone
But not me

Teenagers scare the living shit out of me
They could care less as long as someone’ll bleed
So darken your clothes
Or strike a violent pose
Maybe they’ll leave you alone
But not me

I Have A Thesis- It Could Be Hormones

Posted by Rachel on March 25, 2008

It is not the feud that directly caused Romeo and Juliet to kill themselves, but rather due to the product of the world they live in which lacks grey area, they couldn’t disentangle life from love, so the options of life without love or life waiting for love did not exist.

The Chocolate Bunny Chronicles

Posted by Rachel on March 23, 2008

Okay… so I get my chocolate bunny for easter… and it’s one of those gold wrapped Lindt bunnies that look so pretty and is way cuter than the plush one… and I have it sitting on my desk and I really want the chocolate… but I don’t want to wreck the beautiful bunny… and I ponder this for a while and decide to unwrap it as carefully as possible so I can stuff it with tissues and tape it back together when the chocolate is out… so I pull out the chocolate, which is beautiful too… and am stuffing the wrapper but it gets all messy so I give up and toss it in the garbage can but the face is still intact and staring up at me like why did you do this too me, and lo and behold I feel guilty about opening up the bunny… So I start eating the chocolate to ease my guilt but now I think the bunny is glaring at me for eating it… and it’s very difficult…

I hope this is a reaction to my bunny dying last summer because this is frigging nuts.

Happy Easter…

In the spirit of fixing my life, I tried two new things this break- tofu and skiing. I like both. But the skiing… therein lies pain.

Romeo and Juliet…

Posted by Rachel on March 21, 2008

So I gotta get cracking on this paper at some point. I was talking to Clay (very cool guy, Google him, Clay Robeson, I know him via Buffy Between the Lines) about it this morning, he was telling me about a paper he wrote proposing that Hamlet’s problem was excessive inbreeding. I told him about my paper last semester where I argued that Macbeth was possessed by the name/spirit of the traitorous Thane of Cawdor.

Anyways, my R&J paper is gonna be the easiest topic I can think of- sex and death imagery! Yay! And I got to thinking about their death scene and I came to this conclusion.

Too bad they actually had sex, that scene would be so much cooler if they hadn’t
Clay
2:35 PM
Yeah… no kidding.
Rachel
2:36 PM
I need to go back in time and tell Shakespeare to make them not have sex so I can have something more interesting to say in my paper

You know, with her stabbing herself and him drinking poison from a cup, it would be like they were consumating their marriage… but they screwed already so it doesn’t really work… maybe I can talk about that if in my paper…
